Ok so new here. Been looking around hope this place suits my style as Not the biggest K5 forum out there. More like the hang with your buddies BS about trucks kinda place. Guess I'll see huh.
So I'm 26, two kiddos. Been in the Army for almost 7 years now as a wheeled vehicle/stryker mechanic, about to get out here Very soon and will be starting WyoTech in January taking thier Collision Repair/Refinishing & Street Rod and Custom Fabrication course.
So I've been around K5s for about 2 years now. Couple of my buddies have them, and I want to get one as well. Been perusing CL for a while.
But I would like to take it a step further. I want to make a monster Bug using a K5 as a start. And since I just helped my buddy grab some axles and misc parts outa a much used 70s K5 Jimmy for his, I have a great start.
Inspiration:
It won't be as cool for a very very long time, but I feel a K5 would be a great place to start. I plan on using 1 ton running gear but if I can only find 3/4 to start that's what I'll use. I'm going to keep it simple to start, either a sbc 350 or if I can find a 6.2/6.5 turbo diesel I'd like that, 7004-r because I'd love to drive this more than just mudding, and whatever transfer case I can find. This will be a true hillbilly build, with as much free/cheap stuff I can find, a muddin' rat rod in a way. I might even Start with the 1/2 ton axles that's on the parts Jimmy we just worked on cause it's there and free... for the time being. I'd like to set this on 44s right off the bat, because I feel if this thing doesn't look just disgusting, it might be kinda lame.
Anyhoo that's the plan to get this up as fast as I can, then after having it for a while I'll look into and learn about hydraulic 4 wheel steering, better frame/chassis mods and so on. I'll keep you guys posted. I have a Bug, my buddy'll let me get his parts Jimmy, now I just need an engine (parts Jimmy had a 400ci.. which we pulled the drain plug for S&G while we were doing the axles... and it poured cleared water for about a minute and a half before mud/sludge came out) and some better running gear.

So I'm going to hold off on the project until I finish school. For the time being I got me a '86 K5 Blazer for $850! 1/2 ton, 4" suspension, 2" body. Has 33x12.50x15 Wild Country, looking for some 35s right now. Don't know the gearing yet, I'll find it out. 350 w/700r-4. Trying to figure out the dual shock mounts in the front 'cause there's only one there but two upper mounts.
Carpets already ripped out and ready for rhino line, or another idea I have. Wiring gremlins from the genius who installed the kc lights. Broken left rear top shock mount. Broken power steering pump braket and needs exhaust. But it runs. I'll take it wheelin' as soon as I fix that shock mount.
