Hello. I am new to the forum and the K5 community. I’m 23 with little mechanical experience.
I recently got a 79 with a 350 combo and a np203 Transfer case. I Didn’t fully understand the concept at first but figured it out as I’ve never encountered this set up before. Truck ran great and then the transmissions Drive went out. Reverse is still good. I’ve looked into rebuild kits that are decent but I do not have the experience (I’m sure I could figure it out but rather not start another problem) and called some shops that were way to expensive. More than what I paid for the truck. I’ve found one on market place that “has been rebuilt” but have not heard back about it.
My question is do I need a 4wd transmission to bolt the Transfer case to?
If so for the mean time could I just install a 2wd trans unbolt the transfer case and take out the front drive shaft and make it a 2wd truck until I can find the correct trans or rebuild drive train entirely?
You would need a different rear driveshaft and transmission crossmember to install a 2WD transmission. And yes, you do need a 4WD transmission to bolt to your transfer case.
It would be silly, IMO, to do the job twice when 4x4 TH350s are readily available. Just do it right the first time.
