Talking Eaton Detroit Truetrac First Impressions - In Snow

'86 K5 Blazer Stroker 350/383 - 700R LT265/75R17 E-10 pr 3.08:1 - Posi Front
We've got our first measurable snow on the roads and the snow plows are usually late on our streets, so it's slickery-fun out there right now.
Time to test that Eaton differential --- and I love it!
I heard it was very hard to drive in snow and ice because it's so "on all the time" and "takes no prisoners" unit that is too aggressive.
So far - I say it's a great unit --- a lot different from the old G80 from the factory.

That's my opinion.

Is it a locker type? What would you say makes it better than the stock type?

Default Yes ....

It's a worm drive unit ...

Some of the best things is it is silent --- no clicking; it also doesn't require waiting for the other wheel to hook up before you put power on it.

I never noticed any hopping when going around turns - but the traction was less than normal, so there's that to consider.

At first, I tried to back up - up a short hill and it just pulled both rear wheels with the transfer case on 2H, but once shifted in 4H it just got down to business - it backed straight and that was "different" from the old G80 in that the old unit would prefer to pull one way or another.

Returning from my first road test in real snow, I spotted a Toyota sedan stuck through my fence line and the front end into the irrigation ditch.

I took some nylon straps, laced them through the wheel spokes on the vehicle's mags, and pulled him out of the ditch fairly easily.

So far - I'm happy.
