Strap - 2

RE: Strap or Chain

Strap 100% of the time. Chains are way to easy to break and cause serious damage to vehicles and people. I have a smaller 10,000 strap for small work, and a 30,000 Pro Comp strap for larger jobs.

strap... straps store the energy needed to be pulled(resistance) chains don't

Strap. They dont rust.

RE: Strap or Chain

Strap. They don't cause damage to trees when you have to wrap around them. And they don't cause damage to people or vehicles as much when they break.

definitly straps because i have witnessed a chain snap and smash through someones front grill and crack the radiator. if someone was standing there they would have been seriously hurt. straps dont kill!

RE: Strap or Chain

Straps definitly. A good snap strap acts kinda like a rubber band, allowing a good jerk, absorbing some of the impact and then using that elastic energy to aid in the recovery. Way better and safer than chains. Easier and lighter to carry too.

STRAP

RE: Strap or Chain

Straps of course. I don't think that anyone is going to vote a chain over a strap. Chains are heavy bulky and rust, and thats not including the safety risk you take when using them. I just bought a new set of procomp straps for helping people out down here when they get stuck on the beach, and also for this winter when I move to NY. SNOW BABY!

strap, i've seen what a snaped chain can do, even a strap with a metal hook can do some damage!

chains i like them because they have a higher load rating

WolfPack 12-11-2008 03:35 PM

RE: Strap or Chain

Only if you get the big ass chains...most chains people try to use are less than the 30,000 lb straps most people use...

Not to mention the elasticity of the strap absorbs the stress in the event of a break and drops to the ground, where as a chain goes off like a whip..

Strap for sure

I carry both. For assisted recovery I would definately use the strap. For self recovery, I use a chain and a come-along (hand winch) as I don't have a (power) winch. Even most power winches I see these days are getting away from steel cable and going to synthetic line as well.

You need to do some serious research. You couldn't lift, let alone carry a chain that has the same load rating asa strap. I'll make this easy on you. FInd me a chain rated to 10,000 pounds? Shouldn't be too hard right? Now find one rated to 20,000 pounds, that's teh minimum rating of a 3" wide strap. How thick are the links, and how much does it weigh?

If your seroiusly stuck in teh mud your right a strap wont get you out. However that chain will snap long before the strap and the chain WILL go through someones window or hood. If your that stuck you need cable and a winch.

swartlkk 03-04-2009 12:43 PM

Polls are working again. But they have since reset so everyone vote again!! I added the winch/come-along option. Pick the best one that describes your recovery options.

Rope sling's the best. Virtually unbreakable.

strap. most versitile. easiest to carry. cheap.

okvortec 05-01-2009 07:37 PM

Straps. I had a chain snap while pullin out my buddies Silverado. Damn thing almost killed me.

zac11zebra 05-04-2009 11:31 AM

CHAIN. I pulled out a 78 F-250 from a creek and twisted his bed. Hahah Dumb Fords.

DrEaMsTeVe 05-04-2009 11:39 AM

I used to work offshore and I hated chains. I can't count how many times a chain snapped off of a come-along trying to lift an engine out of a jack-up when they could have used the crane and some straps the first time.

big_blaze 05-04-2009 05:53 PM

tow strap easier on both vehicles because they have give

Biohazed 05-04-2009 08:19 PM
