Strap without hooks, was passengering in a vehicle once and we were pulling out a lifted silverado with the front tow hook and the chain snapped and went through the winsheild right in between me and the driver.

Straps for sure! Only under a very few specific conditions would I rather have a chain/cable - but it sure wouldn't be the generic garbage available in most local stores.

Remember that the load ratings are usually static (still) and not dynamic (moving) like when you are giving a good yank to get something unstuck! a 10,000# static rating is nothing when you are pulling a 5,000# truck and give a good pull on it - that is the dynamic movement that will kill most of the chains people buy.

I prefer a winch and ****** blocks, but if I didn't have that, I would never use a chain. I would only use a strap with loop ends. Regardless of which method I use, I place a heavy blanket over the center of the strap/cable. Don't forget, there are two general types of straps - tow straps & ****** straps. The ****** strap stretches a bit to aid in removal. Always be sure to connect to the frame, not a trailer hitch, bumper, etc. and make spectators stand well clear.

JFC!!! that must've scared the s**t outta you.

one problem with the voting. sometimes a strap is fine, other times, only a winch will do.

was that on a vid posted on YouTube? 'cause i saw one on there once where the chain came flying back through or into the windshield of the truck.

Almost as far from LI as you could get in NY. I am in the Rochester area.
It's between Buffalo & Syracuse.
