Sadly, the whole dash has to come out buddy.
I haven't done it myself, but I've been studying it for when I do have to replace the heater core.
Here's a how-to on pulling the dash.
95-97 are the same as 98-05, except they added a hidden screw for 98+ models

From what I've read, the whole dash has to come out.
Now, maybe it is possible to loosen all the screws / bolts enough to get at it.
If you have to loosen em all anyway, might as well go on and pull it though, so it won't be at all in the way.
You could bypass it for now, but with those cold NY days coming....

You just take both heater hoses from where it goes into the firewall and hook them up to each other so the water can not circulate through the heater core.
Result is a non leaking heater core, and no heat.
