Default Customizing my door panels?

So, today I had to replace my drivers side lift motor (what a PITA) and I was looking at the panel. I noticed that the area around the handle is covered by a fabric and on closer inspection I found it ugly. I honestly never noticed it before that moment. I'm thinking of reupholstering that section of the door with an accent color; probably red as to match the exterior. I'd probably go with a suede material because it's soft and it's right where the arm would rest up against.

Have any of you ever reupholstered that accent area of the door panel before? If so, what would be the best material to use. I won't be using actual suede leather as it's too thick and gets damaged by water but there are Polyester suedes that are machine washable so moisture wouldn't be a problem with them. Also, is there any foam backing behind that cloth or is it just a hard surface. I'll attach a pic of a panel off of ebay that's similar to mine for reference. The pic looks more black whereas mine is a bit more gray. Plus mine is electric whereas the one pictured is manual.
