Default Locks not unlocking

Hello all - just made a trip to the junkyard this weekend to grab a few things. One of those things included a door lock relay. I was anxious to put it in and see if it fixed my problem - which is door locks that lock, but do not unlock. When the button on either door is pushed to lock, they lock. When the button is pushed to UNlock, nothing happens. The relay does not click. Nothing. Nada. I took a paper clip and jumpered the connections on the relay to simulate a "unlock".....the relay clicked and they unlocked. Hmmmmmm. So one might think...switch. BOTH switches? I haven't pulled a door panel and tried jumpering the wires at the switch to simulate a "unlock" connection but I will probably try that just to see. I just have a hard time believing both switches could be bad. Seems like something else. Is there a circuit wired in series that maybe flows through both switches and if one is broke the other doesn't work either? Any ideas on where to look? You'd think there would be either 12V or ground at the switch that's common and then it sends it to one side of the relay or the other, depending on the position of the switch. And you'd think the lock and unlock wires from each switch have to meet somewhere since they both do the same thing. One thing that I noticed yesterday was that apparently the rear hatch has something to do with the DRIVER'S SIDE lock. I had pushed the button to test the switch and of course both doors locked. I manually slid the passenger door to the unlock position and then walked around to the back and the hatch was still locked. Pushing the lock there did nothing. Walked around to the driver's door and used the key to unlock it. Then went back and the hatch was unlocked now. I'm not sure if that has any bearing on anything but I thought it was worth mentioning. No this is not really that big of a problem, just annoying. I'd like to be able to have the locks function properly. Just looking for ideas.
