Thanx Jman |
RE: Overhead console
good luck on that.

Its the full length console with temp, compase, and map lights. Thanx Jman I can't find a wiring diagram, but.... if I were doing this, I think the first thin I would do is remove the dash pad. Then remove the trim off either the right or left front pillar, them the trim off the front of the head liner. I'd just run a power wire from the fuse box up thru the dash and up the pillar etc to the console. Splice the wire to feed the lights and the compass. You could probably use a console mounting screw for grounding purposes. Temp guage??? I need to look at a diagram for that to see where the feed to the guage comes from ( if it comes from the coolant temp sensor at a lower voltage or from the computer after the sensor. Do you know how to calibrate the compass? once it's operational, just drive the car in a circle 3 times and it should self calibrate. No real answers here, but maybe some helpful ideas. By the way...do your friend think you're crazy? lol |
RE: Overhead console
ORIGINAL: 1996BZR good luck on that. Anyway, what year was the console taken out of and what options does it have (mpg, trip mileage, average speed, compass, temp, etc). My best advice would be to get all of the electrical connectors with the console with about 1' of wire behind the connectors. If it's a newer console, the compass module will be in the console. There are two different consoles from the newer years. One with the full blown trip computer and one that is basically compass/temp and something else (can't remember). The full blown trip computer requires a class 2 serial bus connection to the BCM (not gonna happen in your monte) to access all of the functions. I'll check back after work and look up all of this stuff for ya. PM me a reminder just in case. |
RE: Overhead console
Hi guys
No the Jman is not crazy, just something I want to do. I held it in place and it looks like it is made to be there. lol A little luck! Yeah I'll prolly need it. I removed the console from the truck myself, right down to were the wires join the main harness. The harness has plug ins for the lighted mirrors and 1 other at the main harness. The main plug in has the following wires E=green, D=orange, C=black, B=yellow, A=white F=black/white, G=green/black, H=grey, J=brown, K=black I think it was a 97ish blazer or jimmy I got it from. It was partly dissmantled already. All the console has is temp and compass. Same as my 95blazer and the girlfriends 96 blazer. |
RE: Overhead console
4 Attachment(s)
So it looks like you are correct, however, I only have a partial reference to the wires you listed. Also attached are the 98 w/o trip & w/ trip schematics.

RE: Overhead console
Kyle is there a site somewhere that you got this chart from? I can't really read it that well.

RE: Overhead console
That's as good as it gets. Did you click on the image, then zoom in on it? IE and Firefox fit the image to the window. If you zoom in you can make things out much better.
|
RE: Overhead console
ZooM, how the heck do I do that.? lol
|
RE: Overhead console
Download the image and view it with whatever app you use to view photos. You should be able to zoom in on sections of the image for a better view.

RE: Overhead console
i have a '97 factory service manual set, let me know if you need anything scanned. my '97 has an overhead console as well, so i might be able to help with wiring and bracket issues.
|
RE: Overhead console
Magtec if there is anything in your manual that has to do with the wiring of the console that would be great if you could scan it. I got to custom make some new brackets to mount it to my car.

RE: Overhead console
I got the console installed in the car. Just need to get it wired up and reinstall the headliner.

RE: Overhead console
TTT
Anybody have any wiring know how with these things? |
RE: Overhead console
I don't know if this helps 'cause I'm not great with electrical, other than simple old stuff. Here's a diagram with the drivers information center on it.
I haven't seen the console, but I think it would be easier to put in aftermarket guages and run separate wiring to them. By this diagram and the one Kyle put up previously, it looks like the info is fed from the sensors to the computer and then to the guages. Like I said, if you could find jobber guages that look good in the console with minimal fabrication, that might be the way to go and ultimately achieve the same effect. RE: Overhead console
I have a 2001 Chev Blazer LT. I would like to upgrade from the compass/temp overhead console to the overhead console with the trip computer and homelink.
According to this forum, if I have the full blown trip computer, all I would need is the "a class 2 serial bus connection to the BCM", correct? Can anyone expand on this a little? I am unfortunately not very educated on vehicle wiring, etc... The Homelink poses another problem, it looks like additional wiring is needed for that as well? Thanks for your response. |
RE: Overhead console
For the class 2 serial bus connection, if I remember right, you can just run the wire to the orange, I think, wire in the OBDII connector.
I've got an overhead console with homelink I'm gonna see about mounting in my Blazer... But if the wiring harness isn't already there, I don't think I'm going to bother, lol. |
RE: Overhead console
Thanks for the reply. I have a lot of questions.... The class II serial bus connection, can that be obtained from an autosalvage place or is this already in place in my vehicle? I guess before I start ripping things apart, I'd like to know what parts and supplies I need. The homelink is secondary, although I would like to get that to work. To answer you question, if your blazer is like mine, the correct wiring is not in place...
Obviously, I need a lot of help... Thanks. |
RE: Overhead console
Hmmm... Late response, but that's because topic notifications weren't working well at the time...
Class 2 serial bus wire goes to the purple wire on your OBDII connector, a.k.a. pin 2. And no, my wiring is NOT in place... VSS hunting now. |
Wiring Overhead display
Hello.
I'm having a 00 Blazer with temp/compass only. Went to the junkyard and got myself a new display (out of an 01) with all the fancy stuff in it. However: The first six wires of the new MPG display match my old display. But then there are two (not only one) additional wires on 8 (orange) and 9 (yellow). Can anybody pease tell me what do do with them? Thanks. |
some progress
I just found out:
(8)orange 14-Battery Positive Voltage (9)yellow 15- Trip computer/nav class 2 serial data link Mor information on: http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/96-b...ion-10959.html So now my question is regarding Pin 8 (orange): What means PAttery positive voltage? Does the display need to be provided with power at all times (even if the ignition switch is in the off position)? |
This will tell you all you need to know to install one of these
http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f200/o...nstall-214399/ I used it when I did my install. Also when you get it installed to set the variance on it. There is a section that tells you how. Once thats done they work great. Also look here if you end up with the ones with the MPG/Trip computers in it https://blazerforum.com/forum/audio-video-electronics-8/blazer-overhead-display-upgrade-20854/ |
Here are the schematics from the 2000 FSM:

ive been looking for this all day |
Hello all, I'm posting my question here because you seem to have the info I need so here's my question...is there anyway to reset the outside temp on my 02 Blazer. It has the temp/compass the compass works fine but since it was in an accident the temp reads oc. I checked the wires in the area of the damage from the accident and they are good. Is there a fuse or reset to correct this or do I need to keep looking for a wiring problem? Thanks, Oh and I've replaced the sensor so I know that's good.
|
If you can't find the fuse, disconnect the battery for 5 mins.
|
Thanks, I'm ready to try just about anything right now.

I just did this swap in my 00 Blazer. I got a console from 98 via ebay (make sure they include the other side of the harness!) ...
I had been looking around for a full size charcoal colored console to replace the one I have... when I received the new one it was dirtier then mine, so I started to look into whether I could pull the trip computer module to swap the new into my old... of course as it turns out it's DEAD SIMPLE and if I had bothered to look that up first I could have bough any console size or color I wanted which would have opened up some cheaper options for me, oh well :) Anyway, what I was able to do was individually pull all 6 of the conductors out of the older 6-pin compass harness and then insert them into the correct position of the 9 pin trip computer harness, that way there aren't a bunch splices up there waiting to fail... what I did was to look at the connector, I saw there was a red piece of plastic piggy backed on it, I pulled that and I found that the plastic had 9 little "fingers" on it... well if you flip it around and insert it into the other end (one finger at a time), it will release the individual conductors (be careful and example closely before you do this!)... Anyway, it took a few minutes to figure out, but then I was in business pulling the conductors from both the 6 and 9 pin harnesses, I'd suggest you practice on the 9-pin harness first, if you screw up a wire or conductor there it isn't too bad since you won't use 6 of them anyway. The end result is that you only have to do 2 splices up there, one for "Yellow" (data bus) and one for "Orange" (+12 constant). I got the +12 constant from the map light wire of the other harness up there, it was also orange so I took a guess, tested with my meter, and found I was all set... just make sure you have the dome light override on so you make sure you are getting +12 and not dome light power. Then I routed a new 16# wire down the A-pillar (I zip tied it to the existing foam covered harness there) to under the driver kick panel and then spliced to the back of the OBD-II connector purple wire, then up a the overhead console I used a butt connector to connect that to the existing yellow wire of the 9-pin hardness (do this part LAST in case you f&$k up running the wire...) I plugged in the trip computer, started up the engine, set it for instant economy then rolled back/forth in the the driveway to see the numbers go up... I waited another minute or so because I heard someone say that there's a pre-97 to post-97 issue, well knowing I had a 98 computer and 00 truck I figured I'd be ok, but better safe than sorry... after that I buttoned it all up. I had to leave for a trip at 10:00AM... I started this job at about 8:50AM, and was interrupted at one point to talk to a neighbor for a bit, so all in all I'd say it took me under 60 mins to complete the entire job from start to finish...and I never opened the hood or pulled a fuse. I needed a 9/32nd socket to remove the kick panel bolts under the dash and unscrew the OBD-II connector from the panel (not needed but made it easier to get that purple wire).... a #2 (or maybe it was #3) Phillips to remove the console from the ceiling... and a pair of lineman's pliers with the little crusher thing to complete the butt connector on the yellow wire and crush the splice taps. I also used about 8 small zip ties around each splice and a few other places to keep things in line. I pulled the existing electric tape back from the harness and used that to wrap over all the splices, then zip tied over it to hold it in place. BTW, I ended up I getting 22.3MPG average on my trip across the state yesterday... which at $3.839/G makes me want to trade her in for a Civic or something that gets better mileage :icon_wheel: ... :icon_teeth: |
