Default wtf is this black box?

Looking to get a quote on my exhaust and while getting my catalytic converter replaced, i noticed a black box under the driver rear quarter panel back near the bumper on my 97 Jimmy 4x4 4 door. Wtf is this? Fuel pump?

What exactly is its purpose? Does it affect anything if it is bad?
