Default 4 w/d wont engage all the way...clicks/grinds

OK....BOUGHT A 99 BLAZER 4X4... New to 4x4 ownership...push the button, I can hear the vacuum switch engage...even went so far as to hook an independent source of vacuum...it pulls/pushes? but does not engage all the way any ideas? 1st time I engaged it after the initial buy..it was in gear then jumped out with a big bang at about 25 mph...since then it hasn't engaged all the way....would like to fix it, hopefully without swapping out the whole thing as my friend/mechanic suggested..... thanx for any help/comments/ideas....s\scott

How far can you pull the cable with vise grips? I had mine apart yesterday changing the actuator (in which the plunger was bent) and after I put the new one in it only moved maybe 1/4 of an inch.

I did not do the vise grip thing, my mechanic did....but 1/4" doesn't sound like enough movement to me.

Bad transfer case....?

check for leaks on the transfer case...no oil = bad transfer case.
