4x4 Lever Pops out of Gear
Hi all, first time poster, long time lurker.
I have an 88 S10 Tahoe 4x4, 4.3. It has been off the road for a few years, and just got it back on in time for the freak snowstorm this morning. I remember it doing it the last time I drove it about 4 years ago, but I had forgotten about it.
What's happening, is you pull the lever and there's no problem engaging 4wd, when the light is lit, it's on.
However, it seems like the lever is not locking into place, and the vibrations just from normal driving will cause it to drop out of 4wd and into 2wd. Normally I would think you would have to push the button on the lever in to disengage 4wd, similar to how it has to be pushed in to go to neutral/4lo, etc. If I pull it a little further beyond where it engages 4wd (toward neutral, the little indicator light for 4wd goes off), it will stay in a little longer, and I can see when it vibrates down because the 4hi light will come back on.
Is there some sort of lock/pawl that needs replaced or lubricated?
My father and I are planning on cracking it open and taking a look, but I just wanted to check and see if anyone here knew about or had dealt with this before.
