Default How to engage 4wd?

Just bought an 88 4x4 Jimmy yesterday and am trying to figure the thing out since it didn't come with an owner's manual.

How do I engage 4wd? Am I supposed to be moving or stationary? Parking gear? Neutral? I have absolutely no idea. I tried putting it into 4LO earlier with the little 4wd switch when I was stationary and it was in neutral and I immediately backed off when I heard grinding noises. I THINK I might have eventually got it working, but it's hard to tell when I'm by myself. Is there an easy way to tell if 4wd is engaged?

To sum up, how do I engage 4wd? And how can I tell if 4wd is engaged.

Thanks,
Amir

EDIT- Anyone know where I can get an owner's manual? I bought the Haynes manual, but it's really just focused on repairs it seems. And, is there a website with some Jimmy information? I know it's fairly similar to the blazer, but I don't know just how similar. Thanks again.
