axle shaft reinstallation problem

Hello all, So I have a 1997 blazer 4x4 on which I'm installing a 6" suspension lift. Over all its going relatively smooth. here's my problem- upon dismantling the front suspension I discover both CV drive shafts were shot they basically fell apart when I removed the steering knuckle. I got the drivers side to "pop" out of the differential no problem but the passenger side was really being a bear after some firm but gentle persuasion I finally got the passenger side to "pop" out as well, but as I removed it the axle shaft came out of the axle shaft tube with it. so I thought ok no big deal once I get it separated from the CV axle I'll just "pop" it back in. right?...WRONG! I cant get that SOB to go back in for nothing! I've spent an hour or more fiddling with it trying to get it to "align" and it feels like it kind of does but it only goes so in far and then stops with it sticking out a little more then an inch from flush with the axle shaft tube. I looked down the tube and I can see what looks like a washer that slides around so I stuck a long pointed rod down the tube to align the washer with the hole behind it and it still didn't work. I don't get it! what am I doing wrong? what's the trick? it shouldn't be this difficult. I'm a pretty good shade tree mechanic, its not like this is my first rodeo. I simply did what I saw a 10 other guys do on youtube. I do have a manual and it talks about removing the 4x4 cable and removing the axle shaft tube from the differential being carful not to disturb al the spring loaded parts inside. surely there's got to be an easier way. Please help. this is the only thing holding me up from 4x4 glory. I almost want to just go to the U-pull-it wreaking yard and buy another one.
