Default this cant be good

ok so i blew out my front diff and i just put one back in i put her in 4 wheel and tore around in the snow and it worked great i went out on to the road and as soon as i hit the gas it started banging and grinding and not shifting right. so i went back off road ind it is fine so as soon as im pavement and get full traction in at screws up but it off road its fine. and in 2 wheel drive on or off road it is fine i took it on the highway in 2 wheel and no problems. the only thing i can think of is they gave me the wrong gear ratio and when im off road it is alowing it to slip and diffrent speds and i dont notice the problem...let me know if there is something im not thinking of.

Thanks, Matt

Thats pretty normal actually. You should only use 4wd when your front wheels can be allowed to slip. A few things though....does it only bind up when youre in 4wd in a turn? Because you should be able to go in a straight line in 4wd (at low/er speeds) with no problem. Its just that in 4wd, sharp turns bind up the front end.

no its doing it if im going straight and i could go down the road in 4 wheel hi before it broke and it never did that before and now its really bad grinding and clunking in 4 wheel hi going straight or in turn. im really pissed i spent the last few weeks in the snow putting this in...i really have to build a garage for all the things that i do lol. oh and what is lower speeds because it seems to do it after i hit about 15 km/hr

Thanks

You did make sure that the gear ratios were the same on the replacement front diff right...? Sure sounds like you have a mismatch in gear ratios between the front and rear diff.

Here is what I would do. Manually lock in the front axle by pulling on the actuator and clamping it in the engaged (pulled) position. If you can turn the front driveshaft, turn it, counting the number of revolutions of the driveshaft that it takes to turn the wheel once. You may want to mark the driveshaft and the wheel so that you can keep track properly. I usually will mark the diff housing in 4 locations 90 degrees apart for better reference.

If your results match up with what you show in the glove box, then you may want to repeat the process on the rear axle. Of course, you will need to have the whole front end up on jack stands for this operation (back end in the case of testing the rear gear ratio).

I am betting that somehow you have gotten a slightly different gear ratio. Hopefully you have not destroyed anything in the process! If you have, fight with the salvage yard!
