Default Crud in steer shaft and upgrades?

I know I've been posting a lot lately I've just got a question about this steering shaft. I pulled it off today and I noticed it was packed full of dirt like crud and I got a lot of it out. Here's what's left. What is that stuff? Is it old grease, and when I put it back on do I grease the inside of the shaft and not just the splines? I heard the flaming river u-joint is the easiest way to upgrade my type of shaft any opinions?

It looks like grease, but there's no reason to put any more than a very light coat of grease on the splines to make it easier to remove in the future.

Eliminating the rag joint is a nice upgrade. There are a couple of different steering joints available, including the Flaming River. Mine is a Borgeson, for example. Personally, I would steer clear of cheap, no-name ebay stuff where safety is involved (like with steering). I think you can also use a Jeep XJ steering shaft with very minor mods, but it's easier to change the joint, IMO.

I'd guess that the grease is from the steering shaft expansion joint that would allow for some movement between the body and the frame.
