Default DD goes to Moab

Ok, so I have a stock 99 ZR2. Its my daily driver. It sees some FSR action every now and again but nothing crazy (Im usually by myself)

This fall I am driving down to Moab for a couple of weeks. I am not going to specifically 4x4, but will be out far enough in the back country I want to be confident in my vehicle and be able to extract it if I get stuck. I have a $1000 budget to spend on a couple upgrades / recovery gear before I go.

I was thinking about an Aussie locker, but I dont even know if they make em for my diff. Again, I drive it on the road 90% of the time, so I don't know my best option here. Whats the best bang for my buck for extra traction.

**On a side note, while researching diff lockers, I found that my diff originally came with the G80 locker / LSD. I don't believe this has ever worked since I have had it, I didnt even know it was in there. I have never heard or felt it engage, nor ever thought I had exceptional traction in 4wd. I drive in the snow fairly often and would figure I would feel or hear it engage if it is functioning.

What could cause the G80 to cease functioning?
Can the G80 easily be replaced with a aussie or detroit locker in my driveway?

Locker is defiantly the way to go. You will want a winch and some straps. Id do a 2" budget lift to give a little more clearance.
