Front differential is making grinding noise and squeeking
My 2004 4X4 started making a grinding noise when I slow down. It now also squeeks when I slow down. I took it a transmission shop with a good reputation. They told me that the transmission was fine, and that there was a "little" noise in the differential, but not to worry about it. Well, it continues to make the noises, so I jacked it up and crawled underneath to see what I could find. When I turn the rear drive shaft, it squeeks from inside the case. Thought maybe it was the bearings, so I wiggled both axles, and there is no play in either of them. Any ideas?
squeaks? diffs dont usually squeak, u-joints do when there dry and wore out. look for powdered rust aroung the ujoint caps and any play is bad. if grinding or moaning diff, first make sure the oils full, its deff somthing to worry about. the diff may be failing, when u check the oil, if its black or smells burnt shes on the way out. oh btw if when u turn the rear drive shaft in neutral, sometimes the trans case will make a faint squeel, its a one way bearing sqauking and that is normal. i think if your not comfortable with diaging it u should get another opinion, remember find a good independent shop u trust and stay with them. may cost a few bucks more now but peace of mind and honesty saves u in the long run. get it checked
