Alright well I went to Mr.lube for an oil change yesterday, and the guy working under my truck said that I have something (cant remember what he called it) leaking up front. He said that if I tryed to put it in 4x4 it would grind really bad.

can anyone give me some insight please?
maybe a rough idea on what needs to be done, and maybe a guesstimate price?

snow is coming and theres no way I wanna be on the highway in 2hi!

 

is it the fronttransfer case thats leaking.

 

I'd say so. If the seal is leaking, its a couple bucks for the seal plus whatever general shop labor is. If the transfer case itself has issues, they run a few hundred for a reman'd.. again, plus shop labor.

 

i would say transfer case because thats were 4wd is engaged

 

I'm guessing since he said "up front" that it's your front diff. Mine has been leaking for the last 5 years or so and since it's such a big deal to change them out i've been putting it off. All i do is keep up fluid levels and change the oil twice a year.

 

If it's the front diff....if it's the front diff pinion oil seal it's not a big deal ( about an hour job and a $5 seal)
If it's a diff axle seal it's a bigger job, about 4 hours and a $5 seal.
If it's just a small leak (seeping), just keep an eye on it and keep the diff oil topped up.

Best to find out for sure what is leaking and how bad it is.

 

i would go with what chevy lover said plus just get under there yourself and clean around everywhere then wait a lil bit and check back to it unless you can see the leak or were it originated from then go from there

lol, I dont even know where to top up the front diff......ugghhh, lol

my 4 wheel drive dosent work right now anyway so I have to get that done 1st, and then find out why the light is stuck in 4hi.

Check the left axle seal... Mine was fixed a little while back, so it might start leaking there first, lol.

As for filling it... It's pretty easy to see once you crawl underneath and look... I forget off the top of my head where the fill plug is, but the drain plug is dead center, bottom, drivers side... Well, on the iron front diff, anyway...

If I remember right, the drain plug should be pointing at an angle towards one of the sides... I forget which...
