G80 - Best Locker in the World or Bomb? Need everyone's input
#23
G80 does not stand for the Gov lock itself, it is the option code used on everything rear wheel drive that had positraction whether it was a gov lock, Auburn, Torsen, or the older Eaton units with the S preload spring in cars. But yes i would classify it as a locker since it does totally lock the rears together when needed.

Limited slip differential
If a Locker is a diff which can "Lock" both axles together in a challenging situation, I'd argue (and Eaton and GM seem to agree) that the G80 is clearly a Locker.
The g-80 is a limited slip differential that is actuated by sensing torque bias between the two rear axles (Just like all other limited slip rears) and then actuating a "locker/mating" mechanism between the axles (instead of clutches or gears) that is in effect only until speeds of twenty miles per hour are attained and then it disengages. It will reengage when wheel speeds permit. A "Locker/Locked rear" never disengages at any speed nor is there any torque bias between the axles at any time while engaged. The engineers and marketing people are mincing words and confusing the public about what is really in their vehicles. A "locker" is not designed for or approved for use on the street nor is it safe. Limited slip differentials,Detroit locker,Sure-Grip,Posi-traction and True Trac have been in use on the streets for many decades. Lockers are for offroad use only !
