disconnecting the steering usually helps. but yeah they suck. the older s10s there was actually a frame bracket i would cut out the way and reweld.

The mount near the yoke needs to be pushed up out of the bracket and then maneuvered around the bracket once you have all of the mounting points free from their brackets. It can't come straight down. Removing the steering linkage like abig84 said will help a lot.

i dont know if the same applies. but on the fullsize trucks if we were going to over haul the front end we would just unbolt the long tube off the side of the axle. that helps a bit too and takes a little weight off it

I tryed walking my front diff out for about 5 minutes and that was all the pateints i had. I just pried that bottom bracket off to the drivers side with a pipe clamp bent it out to a full 90 degree then the front diff dropped out alot easier

3 or 4 button transfer case? 3 buttons don't have a neutral position, 4 buttons you hold 2 hi and 4 low for 10 seconds or something like that.

What mode is the transfer case actually in? Maybe the light issue is because the front diff is stuck?

You could try disconnecting the actuator under the battery tray and manually disengage the front diff.
