Default I have a 1996 S-10 Blazer. How do I tell differential size?

I was told my original one was a 7 5/8", so I put a different one in, instead of replacing the bearings and seals in my original one. When I went to test drive it I hear what sounds like it is winding up and it doesn't run right, even makes a whining noise. Did I put in the wrong differential? I can add a picture if needed of the original
