I'm switching to an 8.5 axle.Would like to add a posi unit,does anyone know good or bad info about: Nitro,Yukon or Powertrax. I see pretty much everyone likes the Detroits but I'm asking

Are you looking for a locker, or a limited slip (i.e. "posi")? Never had an automatic locker myself, but I've read mixed reviews about them. Seems like they are loud on the road, and can lock up in inopportune times going around corners. Maybe the higher end ones have better road manners? Just my $0.02, YMMV.

 

That's why I was asking.I read an article posted on The Forum about the Powertrax that their lockers solved the negatives of a regular locker and cost a little less.Right now I'm going crazy trying to find a 8.5 for a 2wd. Will the non ZR2 work?

 

I swapped to a 8.5" axle from a ZR-2 and has the G-80
and love it....no air compressors, special oils, or funky sounds
Like detroit lockers...just saying

 

JPL, a little details about your truck would be helpful...
if you have a 2wd, then you need to get one out of a 2wd stick shift. if you have a 4wd you will likely end up with one out of a ZR2. just so you know, if you get one out of a ZR2 it will have a 3.73 gear ratio. thats all that was offered in the ZR2's. it will also push your rear wheels out about 2 inches on each side. that puts them just a shade out side the wheel well as far as the side wall is concerned. the actual tread of the tire is still inside. i just did this swap over and i think it looks great. i have stock 4wd rims on my truck.

 

If he is 2wd a zr2 axle will do 4" per side.

 

It's a 2wd thats why I'm having so much trouble. There is one on Ebay but its $800 plus shipping its the the 8.5 with 3.08 locker.
