Default Moaning Sound While Steering

Got a 1998 Jimmy and need some help! When you turn the steering wheel, it moans, loudly. Not always though, usually after it sits for a little bit. For example I parked it, and when I went to move it ten minutes later, it moaned. Then it doesn't do anything while I'm driving, until it sits again. The steering wheel is loose. Any suggestions on what it could be? Power steering pump or rack??? Thanks!

Its the pump. And as for the loose steering Its just wear in parts on the front.

Have you checked to make sure you are not low on power steering fluid?

I'm thinking that's what it is. I thought it had a steering rack, but I just looked underneath and it's not, it has a steering box. So I'm guessing it's loose because the box may be loose. Is there a way to diagnose to make sure that it is the pump and it needs replacing?? I did check the power steering fluid, and it has plenty. Thanks

box usually doesnt go bad. pumps are normal. I'm 99% sure its the pump. Its not bad to replace but requires a special pulley tool you need. Go to autozone etc. they have a free special tool program. u pay the retail (in case u dont return it) and when u bring it back u get your money back. I think its like 40 bucks.

Check that the idler arm is greased. My 96 moaned horribly when I bought it.
