Time to get diggin. Sounds like the plug got shoved down into the back. So what. Is there just a hole in the dash where the switch would go? I hope it wasn't cut off. Makes you think why was it taken out in the first place? Could it have been a 2x4 to 4x4 conversion uncompleted?

If you need to know what the plug looks like I'll take a pic and upload it as it's easy to pop the switch out to get to the plug.

if this is the case there most likely would be no tccm yet either, where is it located in a 96? my 01 it's behind the passanger kick panel

did they have manual 4x4 in 96? if so maybe they put a center conole over the whole?

have you pulled the dash panel off yet to dig a bit? it should be there.

If you figure out what transfer case you have, that should tell you if it is AWD or 4x4. IF you crawl underneath the truck, there is a metal circle riveted to the T-Case that tells you what model it is. Chances are unless it is one of the rare AWD's you should see NP233 or NV233 and if that is the case, it is time to get that dash off and start digging for that connector to hook that switch back up, and then got to make sure there is a TCCM behind the kick panel. Good Luck

The auto 4WD's is a separate system. The AWD system is a dedicated AWD system with a dedicated 30-70 split i think, but it could be different. The Auto 4WD engages the front axle but does not send power to the front wheels till a slip is detected in the rear wheels
