Default Old shocks=loose steering?

I,ve got an 02 S10 Blazer LS 4d 2wd that my fiancé daily drives to work which I love because it’s heavy and I feel safe with her driving it but she complains that the steering feels loose, I’ve owned the vehicle since 162,xxx (166,xxx now)*could shocks be my issue? I know they’re ready to be changed but I’m more concerned with the loose steering right now. Any help is appreciated!

The steering gear* could be loose but there is also other components that can become loose. A common part that is notorious for becoming loose is the idler arm. If this is the issue, be sure to replace with a high-quality part like made by Moog.

* The steering gear can be adjusted but it must be done carefully as I have researched it can be over tightened.

It's not likely the shocks.

I am redoing my front end and will replace the steering gear (box). I started off with noticeably loose steering and replaced the idler arm and ptiman arm which helped but after 4000 miles of driving including offroading I have steering that is looser than I'd like and will replace the steering gear this time. Also replacing the ball joints, shocks and control arm bushings. I will only have tie ends that aren't replaced when I'm done. Also replacing the shocks with Bilsteins as the factory style ones were shot,

Second the Moog recommendation as the idler and pitman arms were significantly more stout than the ones replaced.
