Default Rear diff swapping

Howdy folks.. So i have been wanting to swap my rear end for a posi. But i am having trouble finding one locally. Honostly im pretty new to 4x4 and am not sure entirely what i need to be searching anyways... 77 blazer with an open 3.73 rear... So my question is, is it more conveniant to just replace the dif alone or the entire rear. And what else do i need to know before i buy anything for the swap.. thanks

Look into a "lunchbox" style locker. They can be installed in a couple hours in your driveway with common tools. Anything beyond that may require additional labor and or time spent finding a matching axle with a locker already installed. If you can post a pic of the diff cover I'm sure we can help identify what axle you have and what options you may have.

Probably still a 12 bolt in 77. Not positive though... Might be able to find a complete rear axle from a pickup with a gov-lok in it.

This maybe?

Yea its a 12 bolt.. Is swapping an entire axle more conveniant? Also that you unit you just posted is a clutch based diff. I have wondered if the clutches in those wear out.

Bump. Would this be a 30 spline? Or do i need to get a code off the axle or somthing to tell. Sorry pic is upside down too.

I think truck 12 bolts were all 30 spline, but again not positive. Almost all 'posi' differentials are clutch based. The clutches do wear over time. A whole axle would be easier, as you don't need to set up gears.
