RE: rear end issues!
My post is right below your I to am experiencing the same clunk when shifting into forwardor reverse and I get a clunking type noise when shift into second especially when it has set over night after ithas warmed up it gets a little better but still noticable. I check and changeallfluids like clock work. I was told it could be the rear u-joint as they oftenfail more than the front but I checked them and they were fine. Hope somebody can help us with this and also myother listed in 4x4 2 hi switch acting weird problem.

I have the same problem in my 89 a bad "clunk" when putting in gear or changing directions I have changed the U-joints and had the rear cover off the R&P look fine and the "Slack" is somewhere in the carrier/posi unit . Is there a simple fix?

I'm getting confused with 3 guys posting their problems in the same thread!
A vibration at speed could be caused by u-joints, driveshaft out of balance, loose pinion gear or wheel balance.
A clunk when going forward to reverse or park to drive could be worn u-joints, backlash in the diff (slack between the ring and pinion gears), slack in the transmission or transfer case.
