Default Replacement Steering Gear Recommendations

Hi all,

I'm investigating options for a possible bad steering gear in my 1999 Blazer.

New units are no longer available. Have any of you have any experience with non-GM suppliers of rebuilt units e.g , Cardone or Dorman?

Have any of you tried to rebuild a steering gear on your own? How did that go?

Yes, I have a rebuilt ZQ8 option gear box installed in my 89 S15 Jimmy. No isssues whatsoever. I purchased from Advanced Auto. I believe it is a Cardone brand. New gear boxes are availiable but are expensive.

So doing the rebuild was definitely doable and successful? Nice.

Did you need any special tools?

I purchased a remanufactured Cardone unit from Avanced auto and turned in my old unit for the core deposit. No issues at all.I did not rebuild myself.
