I've searched around, about this, and so far I'm led to believe it is the gear box failing. I just wanted to make sure before I go breakin' crap. Anyway, I've got around 4-5 inches of play in the steering wheel. (It's a '00 2wd Blazer) It's VERY loose, but still has some control of the steering. From what I have gathered after searching around, it sounds like the gear box?

Best way to find out is start yhe truck and lay under the front and have someone move the wheel around. If your idler arm broke off it could give you a lot of play
