Question Strange sounds

We just bought a 89 Chevy Blazer and we had to replace the differential. We had a mechanic put in a locker and it has never been right. When accelerating there is a clank in the rear end and it jerks to the right, and if we accelerate to fast it sounds like the gears don't catch and it just spends sounding like a chainsaw. I have been told that it could be that it was not shimmed right but I don't know. Help
