Tie Rod or CV axle

Tie Rod or CV axle
I keep hearing this rather loud popping noise in my front suspension/steering and can't seem to pinpoint the part that is at fault. I think I have it narrowed down to either a tie rod or cv axle everything else has been replaced recently (bj's, pitman, and idler). The tie rod ends don't seem to have excessive play but look like they are the originals. Given this is an all wheel drive vehicle, I have reason to believe that the cv's are just plain worn out with 130,000 miles and counting. What happens to the insides of a cv joint when it has this many miles of "normal wear and tear". I've seen front wheel drive cars go longer with out issue, so whats the difference here? Thanks

if take a look at the boots on the CV joints, if they are cracked the lube will leak out and dirt will accumulate in there, causing the CV joints to wear out. check to see if its the wheel bearing as well.

I have the same problem on my 96 blazer. I just had all ball joints replaced and i hear a pop when i like go over a bump sometimes taking off and when going up on a curb. I do rule out the cv joint due to it would make the noise when cornering. I have 200,000 miles on the car. Yes 200,000 and still running stong. Im thinking of just replacing all the front end parts.

Drive in circles in reverse and listen to the cv shafts.

The CV boots still look to be in good condition with no hint of cracks starting to form. I don't think it is a wheel bearing.
Definitely haven't thought to do that but surely will try it. Would you suggest changing my half shafts if they prove to be at fault. What concerns might I have by not replacing them, other than the annoying popping issue. Thanks again!

They will eventually lose all grease and eat themselves into oblivion.

yea definitely dont let them go..if you know their bad...replace them.

I am assuming you are talking about the typical upper control arm bushings popping, especially when going form reverse to drive. If the cv joints are bad you can turn the wheel all the way and drive a few feet, you will hear a repetative steady popping or just slide under and see if there is play in the shaft
