Transfer Case doesn't engage in 88 w/ shifter
We've recently acquired a 1988 S10 Tahoe 4x4 pickup. Even though this is the Blazer forum, it was recommended to me because you folks seem to have some truly useful information, and this question is essentially the same for a pickup or Blazer.
Anyways, this particular 1988 S10 only has 50k miles on it. The 4x4 has not been used for at least 20 years. The truck is absolutely gorgeous; not even a scratch on the truck bed, let alone the truck. No rust whatsoever.
When the transfer case lever is placed in 4 HI, the front driveshaft is not engaged & the front hubs are not locked. When placed in 4 LO, they are. If I keep trying the shifter, it will eventually lock the driveshaft and hubs in 4 HI, but the driveshaft will not disengage when moved back to 2WD. The front hubs will disengage. However, if I disconnect the vacuum hose to the system when the front driveshaft is stuck on / lever is in 2WD, the front driveshaft immediately disconnects. The vacuum hose on this one is near the battery, but not under it. It's much easier to get to.
Any ideas what's wrong? Something must be stuck or broke after 20+ years of no use. FYI, the original owner saved everything, including the window sticker. This truck has the 2.8V6 & 4.11 gears, as per the sticker.
This is the 1988 S10 Tahoe 4x4 pickup in beige/red 2-tone.
The interior is like new.
No rust, just like new.
Not one single scratch on the tailgate or bed. The bed has been covered by this red rug since new.
