Lightbulb Very Rusty drive shaft Fix

My shaft had cancer and I fixed it in about 45 minutes. I jacked the back wheels off the ground and chocked the front to where it would sit still. Started it up in neutral and took a 80 grit belt that I cut in two and went at it. Finished up with Scotch brite pads. When I got it cleaned up I took some Krylon rust silver and painted it while still spinning and it looks much better and has no vibrations or anything. Sunfish

I did almost the same thing. See the link below.

You've got a pair if you are going to hold onto something wrapped around a rotating object with no way to stop it. In the name of safety I would not recommend putting anything around the shaft to sand or clean it. If anything using a wire wheel would be safer. I'm glad you left it in neutral so you had a chance had the sanding belt caught and pulled you in.

When I did mine I flat sanded only. Nothing was wrapped around the drive shaft.

I could nearly stop the shaft with the belt.

I understand you can pretty much stop it with the paper or even by hand, but things can happen and someone else might not be as lucky in the future.
