steering really hard
If you look on the driver side you will see your stearing shaft go to the gear box, from there follow the two black hoses that goto the pump.
Is there any whinning or humming when you slow down and try to turn?
Those Signaw pumps are pretty heavy duty. Rare for them to go out. If you don't have a Signaw
that might be why. Would be easy enough to go to an earlier PS pump. Dodge and Chevy used mostly
the Signaw pumps for PS.
Also when you find the PS pump check to see if there is even a belt attached. You might have just thrown a belt.
That could explane if it went from easy stear to HOLLY COW stearing.

so here is a new development: when i slow down its hard to steer but if i let off the brakes and hit the gas it starts turning really easy. now it doesnt get better if i let off the brakes, only when ii hit the gas does it get any better. so im thinking that the pump is faulty and needs more rpms to get everything moving. thats my guess, i have no understqanding of how the pump works, this is just a guess
???
???
That would be my guess. If the pump hasthe proper amount of fluid and an increase in RPM helps the steering then I would guess a bad pump. The pump worksfrom the belt drive of the engine; the more RPM the engine turns the more pressure the pump develops. Itshouldhave enough pressure at engine idleto turn the wheels, but if it is going bad thenit may take more RPM to develop the required pressure.
