Stability, yep.

Plus the different width of the axles aids in traction while off road. The rear tires have to track through half the track of the front tires. This fresh trail is fresh meat for traction, while the old trail reduces resistance. Like a front wheel drive car, the front tires can pull more then the rear tires can push while off road.
