Default Spare tire

I have a 1995 4door 4x4. and i have a slight problem. My crank release that lowers the cable for the spare tire is rusty and doesnt work anymore. I have the spare just sitting in the back of my truck so i really dont know what to do. Should i drill out the old mechanism and bolt in a new one? get a tail gate tire holder? i just really want my trunk back but not sure how to approach this one.

thanks

Well I guess you could just attach the tire to the roof rack. Not the best asthetically, but you'll get that safari look.

yeah i kinda thought of that, but im not too sure thats what i would like to do. haha i think it would trap dirt and stuff and be a pain to get to at times. but that is an option.
thanks
