Angry ZR2 Steering gear symmetry

Have a ZR2 jimmy. Trying to replace steering gear. Have a cardone 27 7559. The gear symmetry with the engine off is equal lock to lock. The symmetry with the engine running is unequal. It turns about half a turn more to the right than to the left. Is this normal? The steering wheel is centered the toe is close to spec the castor and camber have not been touched. The gear was turned lock to lock and then half way back before install. The left front tire digs into the sway bar on full right turn. Bad steering gear? Flushed the system, using gm fluid.

I have since found out that apparnently there are different versions of BBB industries 5030139 and Cadone 277559 same part numbers but the gear has to have ZR2 specific calibaration so it has the correct stops internally. I tried useing microsoft co pilot but get contradictory results on part numbers. I am trying to find the correct version anyone car to comment.

Wish I could help but I don't have a clue. Maybe check out the tie rods and see if one side is longer than the other. Could be the steering gear isn't clock right.

You might try contacting a vendor that specializes in steering gears such as RedHead Steering Gears. You might even find info on their web pages that help.

It's a mechanical system with power assist. The only way that I can think of that symmetry can be affected with the vehicle on versus off would be if pressure or just fluid is feeding into someplace it should not be inside the housing and hydro-locking it on one extreme meaning that it cannot escape to allow the gear-train to move fully to its extents as it typically should while not under pressurized operation. This would be a mechanical (well, hydraulic) defect in the unit itself in my opinion. If you feel that it warrants removal and return you should probably discuss it with the location you purchased it from prior to removal though just to make sure that you are going to be covered by the original warranty.

The sad state of affairs is that most of the available parts are not of very high quality any more.
