Default Gas Gauge Not Working

Year: 1999
Model: Blazer LS
Miles: 206,000

The gas gauge in my recently purchased Blazer is not working correctly. 90% of the time it reads full and will not move. The other 10% of the time the gauge gos to empty and the "Low Fuel" light comes on.

Any ideas on this problem would be helpful. If the sending unit has to be replaced how difficult is it to do?

I am new on here and have been using the search function a lot.

This is the exact same problem I am having.

I have searched and searched and have seen other with lots of different problems with the fuel gauge. Did you or anyone else find a solution to your problem? I would really like the input before I drop $300+ for an AC Delco fuel pump.

Most likely it's the fuel sender float arm being loose and not contacting the pump housing. IF that is the problem you can adjust the arm so it makes contact throughout the whole float arc, but it does still involve dropping the fuel tank and removing the fuel pump. You may want to consider purchasing a new fuel pump anyways since it's a lot of work to drop the tank and replace the pump. You could always repair the old pump and keep it as a backup just in case.

Mine does this too, but only in park. When driving it operates normally... huh

mine started acting up on me one day. it showed full when i had half while driving. stopped and it showed half. now it won't move off of empty and low fuel light is on. luckily i figured up how many miles i can go on a tank before i need gas before this happened. roughly 220 miles. depending on drivers foot.. lol

mine does it only in park but sometime it does it while driving its the sending unit. i wouldn't worry about it until you need a fuel pump there is no point of going in the gas tank without just putting a whole new pump in. just trip next time you fill up and go by that that's what i do i usually go 350km then fill up.

The floater on the fuel pump is bad, the pumps deisgned by GM were designed poorly, after awhile the two peices that touch relating to the level of gas will begin to pull apart. It works while driving because its constantly being moved so contact is easier to maintain. After a while they will completely seperate and wont register anything.
I had this same issue on my 01 silverado and the only thing to do is buy a new pump assembly and install it. The AC Delco part that you get is designed much better and you need to cut the original plug wires off and install new ones. Took me a couple hours on my truck at the time because I could take the whole bed off. Not sure how easy it will be for the blazer.
