4x4 problem any ideas
There is a ton of information out there for you to read through. 4wd problems are well documented. I would start in the Tech Article (DIY) section, specifically THIS THREAD. From there, the index has a lot more topics to read through and using some of the specific terminology from the threads you find in the Tech Article section, you can do some very effective searching.
Good luck with your problem and let us know if you have specific questions not covered already in other posts.

That happened to me once, on the trail. Got it back to the garage and discovred the 4X4 vacuum hose was disconnected (in an '86, tho). You have probably already checked this part, but it was a pretty quick fix that day which was easy to overlook when I was freaked out about not having 4WD.
Sounds like a couple of different problems. Vacuum switch or hoses(no lock) and your T-case may be out of rig. You might have something interferring with the linkage. Gotta get under it and have a look.

All great ideas. Searching is your best bet. For any extra info on the vacuum check the link in my signature on my post here about the vacuum. Also, you must be in neutral and stopped, with the middle button fully depressed in order to get the shifter to go past n or into 4lo on the transfer case. It also says this in the manual if your soo lucky to have one.
