83 gm 2.8 flywheel help please!
Hello everybody, let me start off by saying I am new to the Forum and New to S-10 in general. I’ve had a few hot rods. I’ve done a few motor swaps by no means am I a professional but I’m good enough to get it done at home and save myself the money to reinvest into more parts. I have an 87 Chevy with a 2.8 and 5 speed manual transmission, It has 270,000 miles on it and it is junk. I bought another 2.8 which I was told came out of a 83 Trans Am or Firebird. the motor is carbureted and has an HEI distributor and only 20,000 miles. I put my flywheel and clutch on it and I have a nasty vibration I found out that some motors are internally or externally balanced so I figured hey let me just call and buy the flywheel. I need no big deal right? Turns out AutoZone, Advance and Napa O’Reillys. Nobody can get one. Can somebody please help me out here? I really don’t know what to do and I got about $1000 into this new motor and I really want to use it. I want the fuel economy and I’m not out to be hot rodding at the moment. I just want something that looks good and is reliable.. I would leave my phone number, but I think that’s better if you get it from private messaging
I cannot help with this beyond giving advice on what I do when I have questions about part compatibility.
I will look up the parts at places such as GM parts dealers and see if the part numbers are the same or not for the two years/models.
This is one I often use because you can put in a VIN although it doesn't have the best exploded diagrams. : https://www.gmpartsgiant.com/
A vendor that often works for me is this one: https://www.tascaparts.com/
I have also found the parts listed and the exploded parts diagrams here to be useful: https://nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/epc/chevrolet/
Once you have identified the right part number, sometimes you can find what you need by using it in a Google search.
Good Luck!

hey boss, the only issue I’m having is I can’t look up the Vin number because I do not have the truck the motor came out of. I do have a number of the intake and one number off of the timing cover. The one on the intake manifold the reads 14046646 also a large W2. and the one on the timing cover reads14033068

could not find any on the block itself on the driver or passenger side it’s definitely clean of numbers other than GM 2.8
1.look at both flywheels for welded on balance weights. If you have both engines take the oil pans off and look at the cranks, do they have balance built in?
2. look at a manual for each engine and see if theres a balance shaft or any mention of balancing components.
3. be sure the distributor and plug wires are installed correctly, its easy to mess that up in the confusion of a lot of other work.
4. put a dial gauge on the flywheel
to see if its bent. The spec on my 350 Blazer flywheel was 0.008 inch at the outer edge. All it takes to warp that thin plate/ disc is to not properly cross tighten and torque the mounting screws, or just to drop the engine on concrete resting on the flywheel.
5 Its possible the " new" engine is bad, its a good idea to do at least a partial tear down,/ inspection of a " new" engine before going to all the trouble to install it, even with a " new remanufactured" engine. Its easy to damage a crank bearing during assembly or miss tightening rod nuts.
