Default engine light stays on?

I'm assuming I need to clear the codes to fix the problem does anyone know where the OBD plug-in is on an 84 S10? Or could there be something else causing the problem?

Man, my 84 Jimmy doesn't even have a computer. As far as I know only the California ones did. What light is on exactly?

Weird, even my 85 doesnt have a computer it had a carbuerated engine... If it did the plug would be down under your steering column betweek your knees in the pedal area.

What light is on for you? Im wondering if that engine light you have is on for overheating or low oil pressure?

It's the red light that comes on when the car dies. But I don't think overheating is the problem because the temp gauge doesn't really get very hot and I just replaced the oil and the oil gauge is at full.

and yeah I know OBD II didn't start until mid 90's but I believe OBD I started in 1983 or somewhere around there. But I don't quite know all the differences between the two.

It would help alot of you had a picture of this light...

I think its either the oil pressure light or the charging system, either of which will light up with the engine not running...

If its not going out when you start up the truck, then I would be testing the charging system. You should also give us some details of why the truck is stalling on you, and we can help you fix those problems too.

Well, It's not that the truck is stalling but the light stays on. I'll see if I can get a picture of it later tonight and post it up. I think my choke pull off is bad but I don't think that would cause the light to stay on.

That's the choke if I remember correctly. Haven't driven the Jimmy in a while. If your truck is stalling or running rouhj it's because it's getting too much gas. I'll look into a little deeper for you. I have a factory manual on an 84. Do you have the 2.8 V-6? Probably something to do with your EFE or EFE the relay. (That's early fuel evaporator). The heater under your carb may be on all the time or not working at all.
OK I took a quick look at the wiring diagram and I would check the choke heater first and then the EFE heater, switch and relay. You should also check the choke fuse.

Thanks for the help and yes it is a 2.8L V6. If that is the case it might be my choke pull off also causing the problem also.
