Gold colored areas generally mean they've been washed down with gas. Dirty is normal.

The round thing is the fuel pressure regulator. It's generally the leak point on the spider (fuel injector) assembly and is replaceable separately. On the driver's side, the leak point is usually the 'nut kit', which is what GM calls the fuel pressure and return lines. They're nylon and they get brittle.

Remove the coil wire so you don't have spark, then have someone turn the key to pressurize the system while you look in there. You shouldn't see any fuel spraying or dripping. If you do, you'll need to pull the whole plenum cover and replace whichever part is leaking. There is a how-to on this site with pictures.

If you don't see any fuel spraying or dripping, you really need to get a fuel pressure tester, rented from your local autoparts place or purchased from someplace like Harbor Freight - I got mine there for less than $20. Then we need to know what the pressure is KOEO (key on, engine off), then what it is 10 minutes later.

Will have a look today when a friend comes over and check for leaking.
I'll also see about getting a fuel pressure tester and let you know.

I certainly appreciate the help.

Mine was all black inside with absolutley NO gold coloring escept where it was leaking, so Im guessing you have found your problem. Have a better look and try and find the actual dripping or spray.

I saw no dripping or spray of any kind as my buddy turned it over.
It cranks strong ! It just won't fire.
I'll pull off the distributor tomorrow and look at it and the rotor.
(Too late in the day now).
I will buy a fuel injector pressure tester but I'll have to order it online.
No place local to get one for $35. Only WalMart on-line.

Had a friend at a shop tell me something about the regulator. It may not "drip" or spray leak. but there is a tiny hole on the left side of it. Spray some air in that hole. if its bad it'll spray some fuel out it as your doing it..If you have any gold area's,time to replace it,or nut kit.

Just pulled the distributor cap and rotor.
All the posts inside the cap are corroded and the rotor point is burnt looking and also corroded.
Could this be the problem?

I'll replace them tomorrow with new and see what happens...
I'm not a mechanic but like to fix things when I can myself.
I want to hold off pulling the plenum cover at this time till I see if this is the problem.

Thank you.

Get a high-quality cap and rotor with brass contacts. If no brass contacts available, get the AC Delco. Stay away from Autozone or Advance store brand.

New distributor cap and rotor. Still won't start !
Borrowing a fuel pressure tester tomorrow from AutoZone.
I'll check for pressure and leak-down.
Also will pull a plug and test it for spark.
Like I said, I'm only a novice mechanic and not really sure if I got the rotor and cap on correctly.

If I have fuel pressure, then, it's not the fuel pump relay, Right???
Not sure how to test the fuel pump relay.

The relay thats beside the fuel pump relay, switch them out, they should be the same. If it fixes your issue then buy a relay. But i dout thats it. You really need to pull that plenum. They reak havoc on these motors. They are the only thing i hate about these motors.
