When someone says the rod is knocking what is wrong with the engine? Maybe a stupid question but i was curious.

Default RE: question

The term "rod knocking" usually implies that a rod bearing has spuninside the rod. The bearings are supposed to stay in place on the connecting rod (the rod that connects the piston to the crankshaft), but they can, under severe conditions, spin inside the rod and when that happensitdestroys the bearing and produces a knocking sound. It could really mean any failure that is rod-related though, like a wrist pin(the pin that attatches the rod to the piston) breaking, or even the rod breaking itself, in these instances the rod or a portion ofit willstill be turning with the crankshaft, and it will"knock" against the cylinder wall and destroy it.
