Question what the heck

so I wanted to do a trans fluid and filter change on my 1994 gmc jimmy
no problem, so i thought
took all bolts out of pan, drained what i could then realized the crossmember had to come off
took it off, only to realize the exhaust was in the way,
rusted ragged bolts gave me a heck off a time
out came the trusty sawz-all
now all back together welded exhaust back
put lucas 1Quart and 4 quarts of dex 3
and have no reading on dipstick
added another quart and now im getting a slight reading at tip of dipstick
i was told it takes 4.4 quarts so far i have six and is still says its low

my question is because i had the pan off for a extended period is it possible the torque converter emptyed out and thats why its taking so much?

and should i add any more or can the dipstick be wrong?

Yeah, go by the dipstick. Try shifting through the gears a few times then check it. You are checking it while its running right?

yes its running when i checked it, i did the all gear thing to or three times
even double checked the reading i got two different days
when i check in the morning before running it and not started it reads beyond full
but running and warm it just barely reads on the dipstick

so you guys think i should add the 1-2 quarts its saying it needs even though i know for a fact i already put 5 qaurts of dex 3 and the bottle of lucas trans stuff

"Normally" when you just drop the pan and change the filter you lose about 5 quarts of ATF. The entire system holds much more than what is just in the pan. You may have lost more due to just jacking up the front or for some other reason.

Again, trust the dipstick. When up to temp, if it is low add some more ATF.

if i remember right, on these transmissions, the tourque converter drains at engine shut off, so in theory, you would have also drained the torque converter, so i would add until it reads full regardless.
