1997 Blazer Tranny Locked up
I started my 1997 Blazer 4.3 4x4 and while driving I noticed a whirring noise while coasting. After stopping at a store while pulling out it started to slip then completely stop moving. It shifts into all gears feeling the lurch but when gas is pressed it appears as though the wheels are locked. I jacked up the front then the back and all wheel move freely. Only when it is running and placed into gear does it bind up and not move. The fluid is full and does not smell burnt. There are a few leaks but nothing alarming. I was thinking torque converter failure but the tranny engages. Another thought was the brake collar something or other inside. Any suggestions before I cave and spend a fortune towing to a shop?

It will have to be towed, but I'd tow it home first and drop the pan. These units are known for valve body and solonoid issues, but I have never heard of a scenario like this, short of instantanious fluid loss and trans fry that results. Since these are electrically controlled, check the condition of all plugs/wiring as well. I have suspicions of the converter, but symptoms would have been evident long prior to this I believe.

Also when i put it in any gear and press the gas it feels like it wants to go and the motor lifts up a little. And when I engage the 4H or 4L the same thing. There is pressure from the flywheel to the converter because its making the motor lift. I am going to drop the oil pan first. Is there anything else I should check prior to dropping the complete transmission ?

RE: 97 Blazer tranny lock up
After doing extensive troubleshooting I found the rear pinion taper bearing to be seized, $10 is better than a $3k tranny which I first thought. Obviously the rear differential leaked causing the bearing to seize,
