Default 4X4 question?

my first 4X4 96 blazer. the 4hi and 4lo both work. it has the electronic transfer case. however when i switch it into 4hi or 4lo, both indicator lights on the hi and low stay on. i thought that only one of the indicator lights were supposed to on. am i wrong or is this normal? thanks

First you need to know if the 4x4 is engaging. Both lights should not be on together. After you push 4 wheel high & both lights are on. Is it in 4 wheel drive? If not put the transmission in nuetral & see if you can get it into 4 wheel low. If you can ( you will hear the relay in the dash click & you will hear the transfer case shift motor actuate) then you need to check for any trouble codes in the TCCM. Mine did the same thing & it turned out to be the transfer case motor. But the only difference is, mine is 94. So I'm not exactly sure if the diagnostics is the same Someone else out there might know. If it is See the 95 Blazer 4x4 problem, post below yours. You can check for error codes by jumping the A pin (top right pin which is ground) & the J pin (bottom row third from left)turn the ignition on & watch the shift switch, it will blink any codes that are stored. But first make sure all your fuses are good. Because both lights are on together when you put it in 4 wheel hi I'm guessing you will get 2 blinks from you switch light. Encoder fault, which is in your transfer case shift motor assembly. Good luck

thanks man. i didnt know u could check the error codes like that. i did it on my older model chevy car but didnt think it would work on newer models. the 4X4 works and i can hear it kick in and so does the 4lo cause ive got it stuck on a steep slope and pulled it out in 4lo. i havent got any error codes while putting it into 4X4 and vise versa but ill check to see if there are any error codes stored. am i supposed to be looking for the service engine light to flash when i check them?

On my 94 when you jump the DLC plug, the 4x4 lights on your selector switch will flash, just like the check engine service light for the engine when checking engine codes. Again I'm not sure on the newer models, but I don't see why not. Does the 4 wheel high work? If not & you can only get it into 4 wheel low. Then maybe the encoder switch is NG. The TCCM should have stored a code. The encoder switch sends a signal back to the TCCM to let it know what position the transfer case is in. That why when you first turn the ignition on, your 4X4 selector switch lights should go on momentarely. You can also just try & reset the TCCM by removing the 5amp TCCM fuse for 2 1/2 mins. Then cycle the ignition switch 5 times. But check for any codes first because that procedure will also clear any codes stored in the TCCM (Transmission Case Control Module). That worked for a while with mine when I first started having problems. But like everything else it progressivly got worse. Try it Good luck
