RE: 97 Blazer wont start after intake gasket replacement
Hey Monkey Wrench,
Ok I have to tell you its only cranking and backfiring not starting. I seriously don't know. I have looked this up so many times on other forums and things. A master tech told me just my plugs and wires could be bad that is why I have got them. I still need to istall them. It sucks I don't have a truck right now. Its april in Chicago and snowing. LOL. I have stabbed the distributor so many times last nite. We have gotten it to TDC and still nothing. Just the same cranking and bfiring.

Sorry Brian, I give up. I was certain I had the right diagnosis, but I've been wrong before. It's hard to grasp the total situation long distance like this. But one thing I thinkmechanics would agree with me on is that backfiring means it's firing at the wrong time. A once-in-a-while backfire can be a fluke, but if it keeps doing it, it's firing at the wrong time. That's what backfiring is. Which means it's a timing thing. If you have real high miles on it, I wonder if it has 'jumped timing', which is a whole different problem. I wish I was there to help, but I'm down south, and haven't seen any snow this year.

Take a step back and think about this a minute.
It was running before the intake was pulled.
Rotor, cap, plugs, and wires were good enough to run then,
and it had not 'jumped timing' either if it was running halfway decent.
2 things changed.
You pulled the intake and the distributor.
If nothing else was done, there are 2 possibilities.
The distributor timing, but it sounds like you have tried every possible combination on that.
Or the intake gasket isn't seated right all the way around. Improper fuel-air mixture can cause backfiring also.
Don't get side tracked, if it was running halfway decent and you pulled 2 things, there is a problem with one of them.
At this point I'm not going to try to diagnose any further because I can't check it out from here.

Monkey Wrench,
I want to thank you for your input. I will be doing exactly what you said in your post. (at least the last one) I get off of work at 1pm and then on to work on the beast. From where it is at right now. Timing marks are lined up and the rotor is lined up with the #1 plug on the cap. I will be turning one full turn to check the rotor. And then restabbed the distrubutor. Thanks again. I hope this is the problem.

Update it ran for 18 seconds. Did everything that monkey wrench told me to do. Changed cap, rotor, plugs, and wires. Here is what it did. Fired up high idled, and then bogged down and stalled. Now when you crank it it just back fired through the throttle body. Does anyone know why it would do that?
Thanks
Brian
Thanks

Which cylinder are you using for #1?
Front cylinder on Driver's side or passenger's side?
