another towing capacity question

I am sure you have all had your own experiences towing with these and thats great, but I have found that these units are not suited for anything above about 3500lbs! Keep in mind that the usual Blazer/Jimmy weighs about 4500 lbs loaded,if one exceeds that then you throw the suspension capabilities out the window especially if the wagon weighs much over 4000 lbs-not to mention the braking capability! I have seen fools try to pull 5000 lb trailers across Kansas with these cars and they usually end up with a burned out trans or even worse:a flipped trailer! Jus my 2 cents... step66
If you plan to pull anything over 5000 pounds for any good distance you MUST add another transmission cooler, they arent that expensive and they are pretty easy to use.
Also you MUST make sure your trailer is loaded properly, the tongue weight should not exceed about 500 pounds and your tongue weight most definitely should not be in the negative numbers, or else you will get death wobble and your trailer will flip like you said. i have pulled multiple 6500 pound evenly loaded trailers with no problems with my truck.

The tranny might be rated for that but the trailer hitch and the frame section it is bolted to are rated for 3500LB's MAX but you can almost double that with a Weight Distributing Hitch it will also double the tongue weight capacity. Lets put it this way if you are pulling a 4500+ pound trailer with your truck as soon as you try going up a good sized incline it could rip the hitch from its mounting point then your trailer will roll back down the hill. Not even the saftey chain will help because it is attached to the hitch. Blazers and Jimmy's werent built for towing things they were built to be a "fuel saving" 4wd vehicle for the family. People don't realize that the blazer is only a QUARTER TON vehicle, if you are going to be pulling things often just get a half ton truck.

Important is setting the Blazer up to tow. I towed a travel trailer 2900# dry weight with a 2000 4dr 2wd to Mazatlan on one trip, Cabo San Lucas on another, Montana another time and multiple trips to British Columbia.
The trailer had brakes, there was a brake controller under the dash. There was an auxiliary trans cooler and a weight distributing hitch.

5000lbs in a s10 would scare the heck out of me besides anything local. i tow with a extended bed fullsize chevy pick up truck with a v8. id guestimate i pull about 5000lbs and i wouldnt go any heavier this thing is pushing it as it is. im sure if my life depended on it yeah it would pull 10,000lbs but if i have to swerve, quick stop do anything besides go straight it might be a issue

I have a 2000 Blazer LT 4dr. with a Factory underbody Towing Package. I am moving across country. I am not a mechanic. I just need to know what I have to do, so that I can get moved. I will be towing a U haul Trailer. I bought the vehicle used and there is no sticker on the front door panel showing the max. allowed towing weight. What must I do to assure a safe tow and travel? I need your expert advice, please.

Hi,
I got my truck at 30k, serviced tranny with new filter and several liters of fluid(not fully flush at 60 k )
At 128K - I towed a 4x8 Uhaul from my bumper 1200 KM across heavy mountain range in British Columbia doing speed limit in "OD", upon my return 1200 KM back home without trailer shortly there after torque converter went (grind in OD) and i got tranny rebuilt.$1500
My recommendation:
1 - goto tranny shop get full fluid exchange and new filter
2- make sure it has proper hitch system installed and verify health
3 - install extra transmission cooler in line or do whatever shop says to keep it cool for hauling.
This extra money(before moving) is better off spent now, I'm not sure you'll get an exact answer to what it can tow?
