If I were to buy a used engine for a 2001 Blazer 4x4 do I have to be picky about which 4.3 I can pick buy?
When I inquired a shop a long time ago about a rebuild he had to ask for my VIN to match it up perfectly and said there were 3-4 options for a 2001, is that true? What's up with that?

This is a very complex question. I think even though the mechanics of the 4.3L V6 may be similar over several years, the sensors that feed the PCM are different from year to year and that is why he was asking for the VIN to ensure a good match. IOW if you just yank out the engine and put in a different year 4.3 , the PCM will be flashing CES dash codes at you. Your PCM will be confused by the different sensors from the different year's engine due to different parameters. So I say you need to stay with the same year and model VIN V6 so the PCM won't be confused.

How much Money / How much Time ?
I agree the PCM and /or ECM computer and Electrical connects are major consideration.
Labor, Tools, EngineBlock, Pistons, Heads, Intake, Fuel injection are expense items
1. Purchase New/ Used complete or near complete engine
If you already have an existing poor/old engine :
2. purchase a new / used Long Block / Short Block
3. Rebuild your existing Engine

I can speak from experience.....I have an 2001 & replaced my motor with a rebuilt motor from an 1997 blazer.......knock sensor was different, manifolds as well & pre 01 had a regular rocker arms in them...as the newer motors have the roller fulcrum rockers on them.. U can use the roller fulcrum so however there is some maching that is required!!!! Not a direct bolt on....In 2002 they also eliminated the egr valves on them, which all u need is your original intake.....Yes there are some small differences but u can still use different yr motors......just stick with the w code motor... In 95 I believe there was a couple different injection systems on these motors & would highly recommend u stay away as they most likey may not work.....just go with 1996 & newer..

Btw... The only electrical difference I encountered with the motor from a 97' was the knock sensor! The early motors used a 1 wire sensor, which is a 1/4 in npt pipe thread . The newer motors have a 2 wire sensor and are drilled and tapped for a 8mm x 1.50 ? If memory serves me right.....u may have to get creative to figure out how to adapt the newer sensor in an older block , but isn't hard at all....good luck!!!
